Solvay's range of plastics and knowledge covers all cable insulation purposes; for power transmission, for automotive and aircraft cabling, for industry, public buildings, the office or the home.
Public buildings Performance and safety requirements have become more critical, particularly with regards fire and smoke generation. Fluoropolymers are used extensively in the cable sheathing market due to their resistance to corrosion, temperature, mechanical stresses and fire.
IT communications Electronic systems necessitate special wiring and cables to meet safety regulations such as the US plenum ratings for low flame propagation and low smoke generation. Fluoropolymers are ideally suited for the plenum wire and cable industry, for various over-cable jacketing, and security alarm signals to minimise interference in transmission signals.
Fluoropolymers are used for flexible ‘raceway’ conduits and for a variety of shielded and unshielded cables. The low dielectric constant of ECTFE fluoropolymer makes it ideal for foamed insulation in coaxial cable constructions, hook up and other computer wire insulation wire and cathodic protection.
Power cables Easy processing cross-linked polyolefin compounds are used for insulating and sheathing power cables. These materials withstand high operating temperatures and provide good fire resistance.
Household electricity circuits Rigid PVC is widely used for protective conduits and connectors to carry and protect electrical wires and cables; plasticised PVC is used as protective insulation sheathing jacketing for household wiring.
The Vinyloop® recycling method for PVC has provided a definitive solution for sheathed cable waste.
