As a responsible manufacturer and corporate citizen, Solvay's industrial policy in the plastics sector is founded on the principle of sustainable development. In other words, meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the needs of future generations.
We see sustainable development as consisting of three main components:
As part of our commitment tosociety, we aim to maintain a dialogue with all our stakeholders and a climate of transparency with the residents living near to our plants. We involve them in our activities and tell them about what we are doing to preserve the local environment. The other aspect of our contribution to society comes from the products we make. By combining the exceptional properties of plastics and the products made out of with advances in information technology and medical science, we can help to provide better access to education and healthcare for all. We are supporting projects aimed at preserving the biodiversity, with the SolVin Bretzel.
Proof of our commitment to the environment is the 100% compliance of our PVC factories to the PVC industrial charter signed in 1995 by ECVM member companies and audited in 1999. Solvay recycling research and development group has already developed such processes as technologies for recycling high density polyethylene plastic fuel tanks and the well-known VINYLOOP® system for PVC.
Since 2002, the environmental management systems in all our plants is conform to the ISO 14001 international standard or equivalent. In addition, our production facilities are currently managed in line with the Solvay’s commitment to Responsible Care®.
In our processing plants, we are recycling under the Commitment of TEPPFA (he European Plastics Pipes and fittings Association) old pipes. The recycling rate reached in that area is 50% by the end of 2005.
When it comes to the economy, as a global company, Solvay Plastics contributes to economies all around the world. In 2005, we have invested 293 million Euro and employed some 8750 people on almost every continent.
The commercial success of our company brings economic prosperity to our employees and the communities in which they live. This in turn leads to a better quality of life, with benefits such as improved healthcare and education.
However, we know that we cannot afford to be complacent and, because of this, we have an unwavering commitment to continuous improvement.
