Solvera® PFPE is the brand name for the portfolio of functional chemicals used as surface treatment in the paper and paperboard industry. Its use enables outstanding properties to the substrate such as oil, fat, and grease repellency (reducing the surface energy) together with a great printability.
Solvera® PFPE is used in demanding applications such as petfood bags, quick food service wraps, pizza boxes, and microwave popcorn bags.
Solvera® PFPE may be applied during the papermaking process by internal treatment or surface treatment methods. It may be used in conjunction with starches, carboxymethylcellulose and polyvinyl alcohol for surface treatment processes and in conjunction with cationic retention aids for internal treatment processes.
Solvera® PFPE meets FDA regulations 21 CFR 176.180 and 21 CFR 176.170 conditions B-G for paper and paperboard in direct contact with aqueous and fatty foods. Some grades have special approval for microwave use as well as approval under German BfR regulations, according to Recommendation XXXVI, for use in direct food contact paper or board. All Solvera® PFPE grades are free of perfluoro-octane sulfonate (PFOS, PFOA), identified as persistent, toxic bioaccumulatives in animal and human tissue.
