Solvay Solexis launches new Halar® ECTFE Front sheet films for photovoltaic industry 

Halar front sheet films, with more than 90% transmission of light are used in lieu of glass to reduce weight and to allow the construction of flexible PV modules.
The new Halar ECTFE film from Solvay Solexis is the best option for front sheets used in photovoltaic (PV) modules. Front sheets are used as a protective barrier for the interior components of the PV module. Critical film requirements include low water vapor permeation and excellent UV resistance, a high degree of visible light transmission, service life up to 25 years and, in some cases, increased mechanical impact strength.

Halar ECTFE film produced for photovoltaic applications is UV stable and optically clear with more than 90% transmission of light in the visible spectrum. Films made of Halar ECTFE exhibit nearly an order of magnitude lower permeation rate than ETFE. In addition the significantly lower permeation rates and better mechanical properties of Halar ECTFE compared to competitive products allow Solvay Solexis to supply thinner films and reduce the cost of front sheets.

Photovoltaic modules made with Halar ECTFE film are exceptionally durable and meet the toughest industry requirements in terms of lifetime and flexibility.

Solvay Solexis Halar ECTFE films are available in 2 mil (50 micron) and 4 mil (100 micron) thick films. Custom gauges and widths are available upon demand. Surface treatments are also available on one or both sides to increase adhesion to encapsulant or other components of the PV module.

A Halar ECTFE film is a strong, hard, tough, abrasion resistant film that retains its useful properties over a broad range of temperatures. This film exhibits outstanding low temperature properties, especially those related to impact. The film delivers good tensile, flexural and wear resistance properties. It also demonstrates excellent weathering properties and outstanding resistance to UV radiation and common industrial and environmental pollutants.

Halar ECTFE films are produced in the Newark, DE (USA) facility of Ajedium Films a division of Solvay Solexis and Halar ECTFE resin is manufactured at the Orange, TX (USA) plant of Solvay Solexis.
