Thermoformed Trays, Boxes & Doses
Rigid or semi-rigid PVC, based on the use of homopolymers or a mixture of homo- and copolymers, is used in the manufacture of thermoformed film. PVC is valued for its good mechanical properties, high clarity without defects, good hot melt fluidity and for presenting no danger to human health. Thermoformed film is manufactured by calendering thin sheets followed by embossing (with or without vacuum).
Today, all-round thermoformed rigid packaging solutions using controlled atmosphere (MAP) are protecting fresh, processed and convenience food such as meat, sausage, cheese, pasta and much more. Very often safely closed with Diofan® PVDC coated lid films.

Biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) films are widely used for the packaging of biscuits, confectionary, snacks, cereals, salads & fresh products, overwraps for tobacco and perfumes, petcare etc. which are very sensitive to humidity and oxygen. The sealability of BOPP films is obtained by coextrusion of different types of polypropylene. Sometimes, the sealing and the barrier properties are not sufficient to conveniently close the package and to give good protection to the food.
For these reasons, most of the BOPP film producers have developed Diofan® coated structures which give good sealing properties as well as enhanced water vapor or gas barrier. BOPP films coated with Diofan® on either one or both sides can be found in a variety of packaging applications.

Besides PVC and oriented polypropylen PET films are widely used in various packaging applications. Associated with PVDC, PET films are suitable as high performance barrier films used e.g. as lid for thermoformed trays to pack fresh food, also under modified atmosphere (MAP). Those film you'll find also in stand-up pouches and in transparent and printed packaging solutions to protect fatty products like baked food, chocolate, olives etc. PVDC coated and laminated PET films can be pasteurized and used in the microwave.

Whether it is vacuum packaging using multilayer barrier shrink bags or laminates for modified atmosphere to be used for quality meat package for highest protection and shelf-life requirement, e.g. for sub primal an processed meat, there’s one common feature: In principle PVDC cannot be bypasses as reliable and safe barrier material for those fields of applications.
SolVin offers taylor-made Ixan® grades providing an excellent barrier against humidity and oxygen, flavor and aroma permeation as well as desired packaging properties like clarity, superior shrink performance, high puncture and mechanical and puncture resistance.
Ixan® PVDC resins and ready-to-use premixes are available for the extrusion and coextrusion of barrier films (heat shrinkable or not), and to thermoformable sheets.

Aligned barrier properties of Ixan® and Diofan® PVDC containing multilayer films prevent the ingress of undesired oxygen whereas providing ideal ripening conditions and full flavor formation according to the packed type of cheese.

Either as extruded mono film with Ixan® PVDC resins or as Diofan® coated substrate SolVin PVdC grades are used in sausage casing by providing excellent shelf-life and low weight losses during storage and distribution due to excellent and reliable gas and water vapor barrier – even in humid conditions. Controlled shrink, resistance against heat and high mechanical stress, e.g. during pasteurization, complete the unique property profile.

Plasticised or semi-rigid PVC with medium or high molecular weight as well as PVDC are used in the manufacture of cling film for wrapping food products. Because already the PVC used has a comparable low permeability to oxygen, it keeps foods such as meat and cheese fresh. It is equally valued for its high clarity, good puncture resistance, elasticity and recovery.
Thin clingy plastic films made of PVDC are known for providing superior barrier properties versus all other food wrapping solutions incl. protection from aroma losses and off-flavor transfer. Therefore those films are the benchmark for effective food protection in the food wrapping.

The fluorinated additives’ product family is a group of polymer processing aids offering unique benefits for the elimination of melt fracture and reduction of die build-up. The main benefit is that they can perform in very challenging conditions and be highly efficient at the lowest concentrations. Apart from the major applications in the production of LLDPE blown film, they show excellent performance in combination with other types of commodity and engineering plastics.
Solef® 11010 PVDF thermoplastic copolymers are available in powder form. Due to their thermoplastic characteristics, no additional anti-sticking additives are required and the product can be used in its pure form. Tecnoflon® NM FKM copolymers are available in powder and pellet form. They contain a maximum content of active fluorinated material offering a high level of efficiency.
Solef® 11010 PVDF and Tecnoflon® NM FKM are in compliance with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guideline No. 21 CFR 177.1520 for use in polyolefins at levels not to exceed 0.2 percent by weight (2000 ppm). The finished polymers may be used only under a maximum service temperature of 100°C [212°F].
Elimination of Melt Fracture
1: Pressure curve virgin polymer. 2: Pressure reduction additivated polymer by lubricant. 3: Maximum output virgin polymer with no melt fracture. 4: Significantly increased output with no melt fracture by additivation of the basic polymer(200ppm processing aid).
