In storage tanks and piping systems, biodiesel can interact with moisture. Microbial colonies can develop on the walls and tank bottom leading to biologically-induced corrosion and eventually to engine failure once the product is blended. When used as liners and coatings, fluoropolymers can prevent biofouling, due to non-stick properties and surface smoothness.

Halar® ECTFE shows very good chemical resistance for
pH> 12 on NaOH concentration.

Powder coatings offer seamless corrosion protection with a wide range of thicknesses from thin to thick. They eliminate welds and thereby reduce the risk of failures due to permeation or delamination. Powder coatings are applied to pre-heated substrates and can be used in any design or complicated geometry.

Sheet lining is the most common form of corrosion protection for large vessels and tanks. Fabric-backed or unbacked sheets are aligned side-by-side on the unit interior, bonded to the metal surface with an adhesive and thermoplastically welded together. The result is a continuous corrosion-resistant liner.

Extruded liners are mainly used for pipes and smaller vessels. An oversize extruded tube is inserted into the host pipe by means of a mechanical or hydraulic puller at a slow constant speed, producing a continuous liner.

Dual laminates are designed to withstand high mechanical loads and pressures. They are generally constructed of a chemically-resistant thermoplastic layer bonded to a fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP). They present a good alternative to exotic metals and alloys.
